Just Say, "NO", to hydro-fracturing

A very scary thing is taking place in our beautiful little province and most of us have no idea it's happening. It's called hydro-fracturing, a very toxic, volitile process used for extracting natural gas from shale deposits. The big gas companies are hailing it as the largest deposit in Canada. The truth may be closer to being we seem a gullible target for greed.
A professor in Pennsylvania (I will endeavour to find out her name and a link to her paper) has researched the so-called economic spin-offs for regions where these wells are being drilled and has discovered there is NO economic advantage to the people living in these areas.
However, what they do get is polluted land, air and water. A thousand wells (these are the known, reported ones) in the US, and a number of wells in Canada, have been contaminated with the chemicals used in the process as well as with natural gas. The water from their taps lights on fire. Even some streams have lit on fire. The air is full of asthma inducing smoke and "holding" ponds full of chemical waste products are open and leaking, as well has holding tanks full of "produced water" (a euphamism for chemically contaminated water). Over 90,000,000 litres of water are used, per well, and that contaminated water has to be dumped somewhere.  Many gas wells have caught on fire and contaminated surrounding water ways and air.
The documentary GASLAND has uncovered the dark truth about the dangers of "fracking" and has become a warning for those of us whose land is now in jeopardy of becoming riddled with unwanted natural gas wells.
Big Business is coming in with the usual empty promises of prosperity and jobs. The reality is, even if this were true, the very real possibility of catastrophies will far out way any economic spin-offs. No amount of money can make up for permanently polluted water and land, not to mention the health effects from the toxic chemicals used in fracking. There are 596 chemicals used in the process, with many known carcinogens. Benzene is one of many known to cause neurological disorders and leukemia.  In some places the gases released are causing asthma and other lung disorders. Many lawsuits are now in process in the US, with many victims being paid off to keep silent.
The time is now to put a stop to all exploration of shale deposits in New Brunswick. The Quality of Life Initiative is attempting to make the public aware of what is happening by holding public meetings in the rural areas that are going to be most affected. We can take action as the citizens  of NB, to lobby the government to declare a moratorium on all now and future exploration in the province. Writing emails and snail mail, phone calls and visits to our MLA's encouraging and exhorting them to protect the people of New Brunswick from this insidious act, will have an effect.
